Happy news from Cat Ba Langur Conservation Project

The Cat Ba Langur lives in the forest on karst hills. They are mainly folivorous, with leaves making up between 60-80% of its diet and the rest composed of shoots, fruit, flowers, and bark.

Group size is variable but generally consists of one adult male, multiple females, and offspring. The species is endemic to Vietnam and only occurs on Cat Ba Island in Ha Long Bay.

Hunting for meat and traditional medicine has been identified as the cause of the rapid decline of this species over the previous decades. With a population likely to be less than 60 individuals the greatest threat now is the small population size. The Cat Ba Langur is listed as Critically Endangered in the 2007 Vietnam Red Data Book and is protected by law under Decree 32/2006 ND-CP: 1B.

"In the last week of April we had 3 babies born (plus possibly a 4th that we still have not been able to confirm).  Two babies in one group and one in another.
This brings us to 7 babies confirmed so far this year, possibly 8 if the other baby can be confirmed.

Babies can be born at any time through the year, but when we look at the long-period patterns there is a distinct preference for birth times in the first few months of the calendar year, just prior to the start of the rainy season.

In recent years we've been having between 10-12 babies born each year, however population growth is slow, but accelerating.  The average over 24 years is only around 2.4% annually, but since 2014 the average annual population growth has increased to 4% per year, with a median value of 5.3% annually."
