DAY 1: ARRIVE PHNOM PENH
Upon arriving in Phnom Penh, you will be met by your guide, then transfer to your hotel for check in. After freshening up, you’ll start your half-day city tour at some of famous places in the capital like: National Museum of Khmer Arts, Silver Pagoda on the same ground of Royal Palace, River Front Park and renowned Wat Phnom. Overnight Phnom Penh.
DAY 2: PHNOM PENH
This morning provides a great insight into Cambodia’s recent dark history on a visit to the moving Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, housed in the former school that was taken over by the Khmer Rouge and used as its main detention and torture center named ‘S-21’. A further visit examines the tragic Killing Fields of Choeung Ek.
The next stop is to Bloom café, an incredible cake art gallery and a not-for-profit training organization that empowers young disadvantaged Cambodian women and provides them with the skills they need to develop a sustainable profession.
Continue to explore Phnom Penh by cyclo, an original Phnom Penh means of transportation and a fun way to explore this lively city. First, visit Wat Phnom, which is situated near the northern boundary of the city. The site contains some good examples of Khmer architecture and statues.
Continue along the lively riverfront to the Royal Palace, then return back to hotel there will be time to freshen up before the evening. Overnight in Phnom Penh.DAY 3: PHNOM PENH - SIEM REAP
Today, take a flight from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. Depending on the arrival time, there may be enough time to relax and recuperate after the flight, or to discover a little of Siem Reap on a stroll through its beautiful pagodas and colourful market. This evening you will enjoy dinner at a local restaurant and Overnight in Siem Reap.
DAY 4: SIEM REAP
After breakfast, morning excursion to the ancient city of Angkor Thom, the last capital of the Great Khmer Empire under the reign of Jayavarman VII. From here, continue to Bayon Temple in the exact center of the city.
Later this morning, visit one of the most illustrious temples in this astonishing complex; Ta Prohm temple, built in the mid-12th to early 13th centuries.
In the afternoon travel to the “gem” of the Angkor area, the pretty temple of Banteay Srei, which is best viewed in the warm afternoon light. The so-called “Citadel of the Women” remains the best preserved temple in Cambodia. Then come back to Siem Reap before late afternoon and overnight in Siem Reap.DAY 5: SIEM REAP - LUANG PRABANG
Free at your leisure until transfer to the airport for the flight to Luang Prabang. Check in hotel and overnight in Luang Prabang.
DAY 6: LUANG PRABANG
Wake up early to witness the local monks walk through the streets to collect alms from local people. Take time to the local market which is at its busiest in the early morning. After breakfast at the hotel, start with a tour of Luang Prabang, one of South East Asia’s loveliest cities and the ancient capital of Laos. Visit the Royal Palace Museum which gives a great overview of local history and is also home to a number of beautiful wats (temples). In the afternoon, stop off at the Arts and Ethnology centre which gives a fascinating insight into the ethnic mix of Laos before heading up Mt Phousi for a lovely sunset overlooking Luang Prabang at the Mekong.
DAY 7: LUANG PRABANG – VIENTIANE
Take a morning excursion to Kuang Si waterfalls with a boat ride to enjoy the fresh air in Laos. Then check out the hotel for your flight to the next destination, Vientiane – the capital of Laos.
DAY 8: VIENTIANE
After breakfast, visit the oldest wat (temple) in town as well as the former royal temple of Wat Prakeo which is now a museum. You will see the impressive Patuxai monument (an homage to the Arc de Triomphe) and can climb up for great views over the city. There should also be time for a visit to the COPE exhibition center which has a fascinating (if horrifying) exhibition about the problems caused by unexploded ordnance dating back to the Vietnam War era.
DAY 9: VIENTIANE – HANOI
Free at your leisure in Vientiane until transfer to the airport for your flight to Hanoi.
Hanoi is a lovely city; wander through the Old Quarter to admire the comfort of a tiny noodle shop, gleaming office buildings, trendy boutiques and exquisite restaurants. There are also endless narrow streets full of children playing games and old men playing chess that just beg to be explored.DAY 10: HANOI CITY TOUR
Take a full day tour of the city, the highlight might be the afternoon cyclo (cycle rickshaw) tour through the chaotic streets of the Old Quarter, visit fascinating to see Ho Chi Minh lying in state in his mausoleum. Other sites include the Museum of Ethnology and the beautiful Ngoc Son Temple which is situated on a tiny island in the centre of Hoan Kiem Lake. In the early evening you will watch a traditional performance of Vietnamese water puppets.
DAY 11: HANOI - HALONG BAY
This morning you will be picked up from the hotel to Halong Bay, arriving at around midday in time to board a traditional junk (sailing boat) for an overnight cruise.
Halong Bay is spectacularly beautiful, with thousands of towering pillars of sea and wind-carved limestone karsts soaring out of the water. After lunch the junk will stop at one of the small islands in the bay to give you the chance to explore a huge limestone cave and visit a floating fishing village. The captain will then find a secluded spot where you can swim, soak up the sun on the top deck or try your hand at kayaking (weather permitting). In the evening there will be a seafood feast. You will spend the night on board the boat in comfortable with en suite facilities.DAY 12: HALONG BAY - HANOI – HUE
Continue sailing and take a row boat to visit one of the most impressive cave in the Bay where you can enjoy the beauty of nature. After an early lunch on board your junk you will disembark and head back to Hanoi for the flight to Hue.
DAY 13: HUE
This day, you will explore the city. First stop is the former Imperial Citadel, home to the emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty which ruled Vietnam from 1802 – 1945. Continue to the dock for a boat trip up the Perfume River with lovely views over the rural villages that dot the riverbank. The cruise takes you to the beautiful Thien Mu pagoda and, time permitting, the lively Dong Ba market. Later return to your hotel.
DAY 14: HUE - HOI AN
After hearty breakfast at your hotel, head south along the spectacularly beautiful coastal road to Hoi An. This is one of the loveliest towns in Vietnam, a small port that has traditionally been home to a thriving merchant community of foreign traders. There are lively markets and quaint narrow streets lined with old buildings that have been converted into tailors, cafes and boutiques. This is one of the best places in Vietnam to shop for souvenirs, especially in the evening when the streets are lit by traditional Chinese lanterns. The tailors here are excellent so you could consider getting some clothes made up.
DAY 15: HOI AN
A morning cycling tour into the countryside around Hoi An. You will stop at the Tra Que organic village and will gain a unique insight into the way of life in this rural area. You will also be able to try a local remedy of ‘herby feet soaking’ in which you can immerse your feet in water that has been scented with fresh herbs. Lunch will be in a local restaurant in Hoi An following by a walking tour of the town, visiting some of the beautiful Chinese traditional houses for which the town is famous.
DAY 16: HOI AN - HO CHI MINH CITY
Today, transfer to Danang for the flight to Saigon. Upon arrival in Saigon and enjoy a tour of this lively and exciting city, home to many beautiful old colonial buildings. You will visit a beautiful old Chinese temple heady with the smell of incense from its hundreds of incense coils, a buzzing local market and the War Remnants museum (which is interesting but horrifying).
DAY 17: HO CHI MINH CITY - CU CHI TUNNELS
After breakfast, this morning you will have an excursion to the Cu Chi tunnels, on the west of Saigon. These tunnels were used as a means of underground communication during the war against the French and then later against the Americans. Then come back to Ho Chi Minh city for the rest of the afternoon is free to explore Saigon at your leisure.
DAY 18: HO CHI MINH CITY – DEPARTURE
Depending on departure time, spend time for sightseeing or find clothes, souvenirs, jewelry, and food. Either you stay at your leisure in hotel until transfer to airport after any excursions for onward flights.
