Sapa is a much bigger commitment. A road journey from Hanoi generally takes around five to six hours, depending on traffic and your mode of transport. You can also travel via Lao Cai and continue by road to Sapa. The journey itself isn't necessarily unpleasant, especially with a comfortable private transfer or limousine van, but it takes time. This is why I rarely recommend visiting Sapa for just one night. By the time you arrive and settle in, it can already feel like it's time to leave again.

If you only have two days outside Hanoi, choose Ninh Binh. If you have three or more days, Sapa becomes a much more realistic option.
